As you point out, it's a powerful example of the absence of trust. Once we start thinking in terms of scarcity, of self-protection, once our motives get dominated by the fear of losing what we've got or not getting what we want, then the universe proceeds to prove our prophecies, making them self-fulfilling. I don't mean that in some abstract metaphysical sense, I mean it's a pretty observable human phenomenon--if you act paranoid toward others, they'll figure out pretty quickly that you're hostile. And if we apply that sort of scarcity thinking to things like common resources, we end up reinforcing behaviors that are sub-optimal for all. Interesting thoughts.
