I used 'it' because we were talking in terms of 'self'. 'self' is what I experience from the inside as being 'me'.

The 'self/me' which contacts others isn't pure because it is changed by every contact, takes a bit of that person into itself, leaves something of itself in that relationship...

So what is the 'it' that does the contacting? Why isn't it a pure essence?

I think there is a distinction implied bt what you say. But maybe I'm mistaking what you intend to say.

I think this is a big discussion and I'm not trying to be picky, but (you knew that was coming didn't you?) I think we need to clarify the 'it' and the 'me'.

If the 'it' is the entity roughly identified with what is bounded by my skin and the 'me' is my sense of identity, then we are in complete agreement. But those are my meanings and may not be yours.

I agree with you Evan - this is kind of what I meant - that self is in relationship, all the time, with everyone and everything "it' comes into contact with, and that is why what 'comes out' of it is not some pure essence of 'me'.

Thanks Sarah, I think this is a great piece of writing.

I think the "I" is an I-in-relationship. The person makes their adjustments and creative contribution - and this makes sense in the particular context.

I think we discover ourselves and our worlds in our creativity - but this is only possible for a self-in-relationship. If our self was reducible to the exterior (behaviourism) or the interior (some new age approaches) then this wouldn't be possible.

This is a big discussion I know, so I hope what I am saying makes sense.

Thanks for a very thoughtful and well-crafted piece of writing.
