This is what extremely good at work. I find your step 4 the most significant for the enrollment of people, to come out of past and accept the present. My subordinator have get this post for many of my friends to help them to see whats if 12-step books can do ? This is some thing great for you to see :-

(:)
Really, confession works but only when we do not repeat same thing again, i.e. to promise self to be true and kind. Then only faith responses, this is my personal experiences. !

thanks for all your comments, people!

@raul - cold sores representing repressed secrets: interesting. never heard that one but i believe it is well documented that cold sores can come on with stress, so quite likely there is a connection ...

@eeabee "sharing combats shame" - a great way of putting it!

@bluerose - thanks for visiting! of course you can put up a link to here. bloggers love links :)

@andrew - confession is such a powerful tool. how beautiful that you have a faith that helps you feel forgiveness!

I share a blog with a friend where we write our own personal experiences with working the twelve steps, and I was wondering if you'd mind if I put a link in our side bar to your blog? This is good information.

I just did some of this (literally 5th step work) the other day, and this time and the previous times it's amazed me how lightening it is, because the experience of sharing combats shame.

I always feel much less shame and more part of the human family when I do this kind of work. Also, for me and I think many others, it helps to have another perspective because my self appraisal is always so much nastier than anyone else's.

I think the connections between the therapy and recovery process are really interesting--thanks for writing about this.

Dear Isabella,

As a Christian, I believe in god, meaning literally, the Christian god.

The great thing I feel about making open (and sorrowful) confessions about my shortcommings to him, is that I believe that I believe that he fully forgives all my shortcomings and sins through the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.

(I'm not trying to bible bash here - just to say that this is what I believe)

Although I do not believe that my own shortcommings and sins are OK, I believe that when I confess them to the lord, that I am fully forgiven and can be fully freed of any guilt or shame I had for my shortcomings.

In terms of sharing baggage with others, I find that when I share problems and frustrations with trustworthy friends, I feel like the problem is out in the open and I am no longer weighed down by hiding the problem.

Cheers

Andrew

Somebody told me that canker sores (or cold sores) were secrets we were dying to tell yet we kept bottled inside. Hence, confessing is a powerful release tool :)

Thanks for this Isabella!
