This is an informative post.

It is sometimes troubling to think about God hearing our prayers and actually declining to grant them.

There is a greater plan, and I don't pretend to know what it is, but I can say that in some cases our present circumstances are a reflection of our past wishes, thoughts, actions and prayers. If we reflect on those, and realize the shifts necessary to get to where we would like to be, we might have our prayers answered.

The problem is this doesn't happen by magic, and takes fundamental shifts in beliefs and actions, like turning of the tides. That can take time, and sometimes unfortunately it's time that we don't have.

CC, thanks again for commenting.

i guess what you say about perfectionism goes along with the powerlessness. if i feel powerless, i want to have someone on my side who is perfect.

what do you think?

This was excellent. Much of what I have to say is in my own blog post, http://clinicallyclueless.blogspot.com/2008/07/being-christian-with-mental-illness.html. Both only, begin to scratch the surface of the issues faced by Christians. The whole culture plays into perfectionistic modes of thinking which is very sad and damaging.

I just wrote a "great" comment but lost it. Hope I can repeat it here.

I'm aware of the great damage done by a lot of Christians with their misunderstanding of mental illness as a medical problem - with the great stigma and judgmental attitudes. Fortunately, I haven't experienced this myself. I've found protection from this because I've been educating church friends and readers of Christian publications by writing about my experience with bipolar disorder. People tend to respect those who are published. I've been fortunate.

Christians can do the greatest damage, but they can also do the greatest good. Studies have shown that faith and well-being are linked. Churches are in a great position to help those who deal with mental illness cope and find wholeness and peace by encouraging them in their faith. But they need to learn how to do so.

I think most Christians are well-meaning. But many strongly religious people tend to be a bit ignorant about anything non-spiritual. They want to spiritualize everything. They need to open their minds more to encompass all that makes us up: body, mind, and soul.

Good read. It encourages each of us to evaluate where our reactions and responses are coming from. Most of us do just 'react' versus even take the time to consider being thoughtful when another person is suffering. Frighteningly so some times.

Thanks.

I do recognise Barry's experience. I have found it to be only a minority (and a quite small one - though I don't have a diagnosis of mental illness).

I have usually found these christians well intentioned but often clueless. I think there is much room for education.
