Great to see this topic being discussed, it should be brought about more than the usual female anarexia because I can see how males would be more resilient to get help

This topic needs as much press as possible to raise awareness and improve recognition of disorder in males + improve opportunities for treatment.

thanks, mindsite, paul and john!

mindsite - thanks for the link to the DSM-IVTR for anorexia. at least it starts talking about men. that's good.

paul, we should talk!

john, what you say about the superiority that comes from the ability to control food is, in variations, probably one of the most significant aspects of anorexia and similar disorders (often called EDNOS). it also helps understand why this is so particularly prevalent among teenagers, who so much desire control but don't yet fully understand how to control what they can, and to let go what they can't.

This is very helpful. One of my sons went through a period of grappling with this problem. He denied there was a problem, as we watched him shrink, until he blacked out in the midst of some physical activity. Then he got very interested in understanding what was happening, as the study suggests. Also, he was free of any kind of substance abuse, nor did he have a distorted body image. Rather, as he explained it, he felt a kind of superiority from his ability to do without much food. The blackout scared him as he became aware of physical consequences and helped free him gradually of this obsession. Thanks for calling attention to this study.

Great to see this topic being discussed. There's a new self-help book for males with eating disorders that I recommend by Dr. John Morgan (UK). Males are reluctant to seek treatment for many health concerns, the medical community is less "on the lookout" for symptoms in males, and the addedd stigma of anorexia means many will unfortunately never seek help. Of course perhaps the health system may consider meeting the needs of men with anorexia from the ground up as those who do seek to engage the health care system are often "ready" and "motivated" to recover . For upcoming research on males with eating disorders happening in Vancouver, BC feel free to contact me (Paul Gallant) at pgallant@interchange.ubc.ca or see "www.nedic.ca" , "what's new", "research" or http://www.nedic.ca/whatsnew/research.shtml

This was an interesting post and I wonder if the DSM-V will address any of these issues as they relate to males and anorexia. If you are interested in reading more about this in the DSM-IVTR, we've recently licensed the full text of the anorexia section which is available without registration here: http://www.mindsite.com/dsm_iv/anorexia_nervosa
